Matias and Jessie Sandoval
Born in Penjamo, Mexico, Jessie moved to Omaha with her family in 1918. She married Matias in 1926 and raised a family of eleven but she never forgot the people of Penjamo. “Mom raised us to help one another and help people who need a helping hand. She always taught us to be grateful for what we have,” said son Michael.
After her children were grown she began making yearly pilgrimages to Mexico. For over twenty years, Jessie distributed clothing, food, and much-needed shoes. She was able to do all this with the help of her family and her church, the House of Prayer, in South Omaha. After arriving she would make a big dinner for the Bible classes and distribute the clothes, starting with the poorest first. Her message to the children all along was, “Go to school, go to school.” The last thing Jessie wanted was any recognition for her efforts. Helping others made her happy. She is quoted as saying, “I love it even though I am not a rich woman. I used to say, ‘Lord, don’t make me a millionaire if it will change the way I am.’ ” Jessie instilled this spirit of generosity in her children and her legacy lives on today through all the family and friends who continue to support the Magic Touch Scholarship and what it represents.
Mathew (Tito) and Ruth Sandoval
This scholarship foundation has been created to honor the memory of Matthew and Ruth Sandoval and their passion for education. Magic Touch is a story of Love and Hope: "Growing up, we did not know we were poor because Tito (Mathew) would make family fun and give hope by making everything special, whether it was holidays, trips, work, parties, and even going to the grocery store. If you got a 'Magic Touch' at the grocery store you were able to choose something from the candy aisle. It only took $0.50 cents but it was HOW Tito presented the Magic Touch to the family. Tito created this family tradition that has been passed down to generations." - Grandson Tony Aguilera
The Magic Touch Scholarship is available through The Barrientos Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Omaha, Nebraska. Tax-deductible donations may be made through barrientosscholarship.org. Simply note MTS in the memo.
